Why did we develop Free Movement?

Free Movement was created to allow for new and innovative options for testing and monitoring. It gives coaches the freedom to measure what matters to them getting them closer to the critical athletic tasks in their sport. We created Free Movement based off of feedback from many coaches and users.

The mass uptake of GPS technology in field sports has provided coaches with new metrics and methods to assess and monitor the performance of their athletes. However, for some positions in field sport, such as a lineman in football, it doesn’t provide any really meaningful data. This is due to the lack of general movement that is observed in this role. Monitoring devices like GPS may not contribute any information that is insightful or valuable to performance for these positions.

Why monitor a sled push?

Linemen need to move as explosively as possible from a 3-point stance and forcefully engage their opponent. The more powerfully they can do this task, the greater advantage they can gain by either acquiring and protecting the desired field position or forcing the opponent into an undesired position. This critical movement task is one which numerous football coaches have expressed interest in assessing.

Using Free Movement, you can assess this by using a prowler sled or other implement you can load and push or throw for a single repetition.

What to do

You can place the PUSH band on the arm or on the handle of the prowler.

Add your desired load to the sled and use the Free Movement app to measure how much the athlete can accelerate the sled.

Moving the sled with a single push requires a continuous input of force to overcome the inertia of the heavy load and project the sled as fast and as far as possible. This is why acceleration is the key metric to monitor for this movement.

From there, the coach can assess daily for the readiness or performance monitoring of an athlete, or the coach can compare the performance of multiple athletes in a more traditional entry/exit testing model.
